Beyond Trolleys: Bridging the Emic and the Etic Perspectives in Moral Judgments
This dissertation seeks to understand moral judgements in different cultures, integrating emic and etic perspectives. In Study 1, a meta-analysis was carried out to assess how cultural variables influence moral judgements in the trolley dilemma. The results indicated that Tightness is relevant, but there was little heterogeneity in the data, possibly due to the limitations of this dilemma. Study 2 investigated the applicability of the CNI Model of Moral Decision Making in Brazil, adapting six moral dilemmas into Brazilian Portuguese and collecting data from 242 participants. The CNI Model proved to be effective in distinguishing different forms of morality, including norms, consequences and the tendency to inaction. However, the dilemmas, based on scenarios from the Global North, may not be fully effective in Brazilian contexts. In Study 3, six new moral dilemmas specific to Brazil are being developed, with plans to replicate the previous results. In Study 4, these procedures will be repeated in a different culture, identified by the Cultural Distance Index, to explore effectiveness in culturally diverse contexts. In Study 5, participants’ perceptions of the realism, typicality and absurdity of moral dilemmas in different countries will be compared. It is expected that the dilemmas of one’s own country will be seen as more realistic and typical, and less absurd than those of other countries and the trolley dilemma. By addressing both the universal and specific aspects of moral judgements, we expect to improve the accuracy and reliability of methods for studying this important aspect of human behavior.
