ABOUT THE EVENT

Science moves forward through people working together. Over the past five years, the National Institute of Science and Technology in Social and Affective Neuroscience (INCT-SANI) has built a network of partnerships across laboratories, disciplines, and countries. These exchanges of ideas, students, and projects have proven that collaboration can be as productive as it is rewarding.

Rethinking the Future V: All Together Now brings these partners together in São Paulo for a shared conversation about what connects us and what divides us. The program spans the full arc of human social life. It begins with the bodily and neural foundations of emotion and social bonding, moves to the ways our minds mirror the social networks we belong to, and extends to the beliefs we form and spread, the biases that separate “us” from “them,” and the moral judgments through which we hold one another responsible.

By bringing neuroscience, psychology, and philosophy into dialogue, the fifth edition invites researchers, students, and the wider public to consider how evidence about the social mind can help build healthier, fairer, and more cohesive societies, in line with the global commitments of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Discussions will explore topics such as:

  • Emotion, the body, and the neurobiology of social bonding;

  • Positive emotion, emotional health, and well-being;

  • Social networks and shared minds;

  • Prejudice, intergroup bias, and social perception;

  • Dehumanization and how we perceive others’ minds;

  • Belief formation, optimism, and social influence;

  • Moral judgment, responsibility, and the ethics of emerging technologies.

All sessions will be aligned with the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). The event’s emphasis on collaboration directly reflects SDG 17, which recognizes that lasting progress depends on partnerships across institutions and nations.

MISSION AND VISION

Guided by INCT-SANI’s principles of cooperation, interdisciplinarity, and social impact, Rethinking the Future V seeks to:

  • Bring science and society closer through evidence-based dialogue;

  • Foster collaborative research networks and international partnerships;

  • Promote equitable and sustainable practices in scientific and institutional settings;

  • Rebuild human connection in times of social fragmentation.
